For those of you who have never tried it then you might view it as a bit of black art, a therapy that’s shrouded in mystery, but you’d be wrong.
Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. It’s the same hypnosis as you have probably watched on a stage or on TV with a few obvious differences, the main one being that we use it to help you and not to use you for a show.
In your first hypnotherapy session there would be a bit of hypnosis but mostly finding out what is going on and what you hope to gain from the use of hypnotherapy. It sounds really obvious but if we don’t do that then we don’t know what we’re aiming at, and if we don’t know where we’re going we will never know if we’ve got there.
There will be a medical form too just to check that it’s safe to do hypnotherapy with you.
The hypnosis is probably the part that you’re most interested in as part of the description of a hypnotherapy session.
So the hypnotherapy session is basically three steps:
- Induce hypnosis
- Do some mental gymnastics in hypnosis
- Emerge from hypnosis
If you think of hypnosis as being that feeling that you get in between waking and sleeping then you can understand where you are going to. It’s not sleep but you’re not completely awake, your mind will be focused and you will probably be following what I say.
It’s a voluntary process, one where you give your permission to go in to hypnosis and make changes. Essentially that’s why you came to see me in the first place.
The way in to hypnosis is called an induction. I get you to think and do things and your mind relaxes and gets you ready to make changes. We tend to use a relaxation based induction as a way in to hypnosis because it feels nice and allows you to experience it gently and slowly. It’s not always necessary to do that though and there are quicker ways, particularly once your mind knows where it’s going.
As hypnotherapist then my part is to lead you into hypnosis and help you make changes in your perceptions and behaviours. I help you to change your mind just enough to deal with issues that you want to deal with. Then I lead you out of hypnosis.
Then we have a chat and you can start to notice some new things happening. It’s usually a gradual process that takes place over a few sessions. Sometimes we make dramatic steps forwards and that’s fantastic when it happens.
