What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of healing that has been practised for thousands of years. Its aim is to stimulate the body to heal itself. To balance the ‘Chi’ energy that flows around the body. This is achieved by carefully placing needles on acupuncture points which can be mapped out along meridians. Meridians are energy lines running over the body.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. Members of the British Academy of Western Medical Acupuncture are trained to a high standard and observe a Code of Practice. The needles used are single use and sterile. A full medical history is taken on the first consultation to decide if acupuncture can be of benefit to you. Acupuncture should be considered complementary rather than alternative and can be used alongside conventional medicine in the treatment of both acute and chronic conditions. As with other therapies, the response to acupuncture can vary from person to person. As well as improvement from the particular condition most people find that there is also an enhanced sense of overall well being.
How fast does acupuncture work?
Many patients will experience a dramatic result. In some patients there may be a worsening of the condition prior to improvement. This is due to the changing in energy levels. In some cases only one or two treatments are required, although the longer the condition has been apparent it may take a little longer to achieve the desired result.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most patients are surprised that they feel nothing. Some people experience a tingling or dull ache. The needles used are much finer than those used to take blood. Depending on the effect wanted the needles are left in for up to 20 minutes.
Western medical acupuncture works on a formulae basis researched for particular illnesses then applied to western medical diagnosis first having been made by a doctor. Traditional chinese acupuncture works by balancing the energy flow, the CHI, within the body. Balancing the Yin and the Yang.
Both work by encouraging the body to heal itself. Acupuncture is useful as a treatment because:
- it can stimulate the body to heal itself
- it can improve sleep patterns
- it can give the individual a sense of well being
- it can aid relaxation so reducing pain levels
- it can reduce pain so increase movement
- it can improve quality of life
- it can reduce the need for certain medication in some individuals
- it can reduce visits to the G.P.
- it is safe providing it is carried out by a suitably trained professional
